Federal rules require Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) completion before your CDL skills test. With SPCDL, you complete the required theory modules online at your own pace. Most motivated students complete their online theory training in only two weeks. Weekend study is not just allowed; it is expected for many of our working students.

When it is time to drive, you will train one-on-one with one of our certified truck driving instructors for two intensive days. How Our Weekend CDL Class Pathway Works

Step 1: Enroll and start studying for the permit

SPCDL has all of the permit study material you need to be well prepared for the tests at DMV to get your Commercial License Permit. We encourage our students to get the CLP quickly. Under the federal rules, a CLP holder cannot test less than 14 days after it is issued. 

Once the permit is provided to SPCDL, our scheduling team gets you scheduled for the two days of one-on-one training and your behind-the-wheel test date.

Step 2: Complete the ELDT theory at home
As soon as your permit is issued and you provide a picture of it to SPCDL, you get access to the online curriculum that satisfies FMCSA ELDT rules. Complete lessons on your time. Most weekend CDL learners finish modules on Friday evening and weekends, then use weeknights for quick refreshers.

Step 3: Schedule your two driving days
Once your CLP and medical are in place, we book your two days of in-person driving with your certified instructor. Because it is one on one, there is no waiting for a truck or “learning by watching” while five other students take turns. It is concentrated seat time with an instructor who is there only for you.

Step 4: Take your DMV skills test with our team beside you
The California skills test includes vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and a road test. You get specific coaching on the scoring items like encroachments, pull-ups, and final position for each skill, so you know exactly what the examiner expects. 

What you will learn during your two driving days

• Pre-trip inspection the DMV way: You have watched our Pre-Trip instructional videos for 15 – 20 hours, you will then complete a systematic walk-through that hits every point on the checklist.

• Backing and parking mastery: straight line, offset, and all skills that will be tested with repeatable reference points.

• Road skills and safety: shifting or automatic control, mirror use, lane changes, speed and space management, and hazard response.

• Test strategy: how to communicate actions to the examiner and avoid common deductions.

Because you are not sharing a truck, you simply get more reps. More repetitions mean stronger muscle memory and a calmer test day. That is the advantage of one-on-one instruction.

Most weekend CDL classes place you in a large group where you watch other students for hours and drive for a few minutes. That format often forces multiple weekends, overtime costs, and time away from family without much seat time. Our model shifts the learning burden online to your free time and concentrates hands-on driving into two impactful days, so you can keep your weekday job and keep your weekends. 

Employers love this approach, too. With training condensed into a predictable window, there is minimal lost production and no recurring overtime for weekend CDL classes, yet students arrive test ready. Many companies reimburse tuition once you pass. 

Who qualifies for Class A CDL training with SPCDL?

A Class A CDL lets you operate combination vehicles at 26,001 lbs GVWR or more with a towed unit over 10,000 lbs GVWR, including tractor trailers, flatbeds, tankers, and livestock carriers. This license opens the widest range of jobs across the industry. Age rules are 18+ for intrastate in California and 21+ for interstate under federal law.

If you plan to add a  Hazmat endorsement (H) later, you will need to complete an online theory course and pass the written exam and complete a TSA background check with fingerprints. Many graduates return to us for endorsement prep after they land their first job.

What about Class B or other endorsements?

Current CDL holders who are adding certain endorsements may have different hour requirements than first-time CDL students. Our team will guide you to the right path based on your goals, whether that is Class A, Class B, passenger, or hazmat.
